New Regency and director Edward Gareth are crafting an original sci-fi project set in the future involving artificial intelligence. Fellow cast include John David Washington and Gemma Chan. Teaser Trailer above was released on May 17, 2023 along with the following official plot summary: “Joshua (Washington), a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife (Gemma Chan), is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war… and mankind itself. Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory… only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child.”

Allison’s attachment to the film project was announced in Deadline on January 7, 2022:

EXCLUSIVE: Allison Janney has rounded out the ensemble of New Regency’s upcoming film True Love, an original sci-fi project written and directed by multi-hyphenate filmmaker Gareth Edwards. She joins previously announced cast members John David Washington and Gemma Chan. Kiri Hart will serve as a producer on the project along with Edwards. New Regency will produce and finance the film.

Plot details are being kept under wraps other than it being a near-future sci-fi story.
After directing the Star Wars spinoff Rogue One to worldwide success, Edwards had been developing several projects, wanting to make sure the next one was the right one before committing. He finally committed to that film last year, and once the package hit the market, New Regency jumped at the opportunity to work with him.

Allison spent the month of March 2022 shooting this project in Chiang Mai, Thailand. In May 2022, Allison disclosed on the Naked Lunch podcast that her character is a colonel in a futuristic army. The film wrapped shooting in June 2022 and on June 14, 2022, it was announced in Deadline that ‘True Love’ would be released on October 6, 2023. On April 28, 2023, it was announced in Deadline that the name of the film had been changed to ‘The Creator’ and that the film release would be moved up one week to September 29, 2023.
